Storytime - Downloads Feature

My first project in CBeebies was leading the design on a new feature for the successful Storytime app.

My first project in CBeebies was leading the design of a new feature for the successful Storytime app.

The problem

As Storytime was an app it required a new release to add any additional content, this would then rely on parents to ensuring they had updated to the latest version.

The Product team had identified an opportunity to enable downloading of content instead but the assumption was that the parent would be the one managing and downloading the content.

Our Approach

I quickly created a series of lightweight prototypes of a library area where parents could download and manage new stories for the app.

It wasn't the most exciting piece of design work I've ever done but it was functional and did what you would expect. The issue was that during guerilla testing with parents we would continually hear remarks of "its good... but... I wouldn't do it...."

As with most elegant ideas, it seems so obvious now but I have to give credit to Andy and Joe. They spotted the opportunity, and simply asked the question "what if the children could do the downloading?"

Children can navigate the library and choose their favourite story.

The challenge we faced now was would it be possible to create a download feature that a three-year-old could drive?

Andy and Joe did an amazing job of wireframing the journey whilst I was on paternity. Once I came back we worked together to bring it all to life. I remember there was a buzz of excitement around the office when we demonstrated the prototype for the first time. One of those "aha" moments where you realise you've found the right way.

We introduced the feature with a delightful onboarding sequence.

During lab sessions, the design worked well so we set about developing that alongside a new accessibility mode that enabled screen readers to access all the content.

Our team created a solution that was incredibly creative, joyful and simple to use. Choosing a story to download was as simple as picking a cloud in the library, a rainbow would inform the user it was downloading, the cloud then rain’s into the book once the story is installed.

The beauty of the design is that now I find it impossible to think of another way this could possibly be done. The app went onto receive a BAFTA nomination.
